Search me Lord and know my heart
Try me and know my thoughts.
Psalm 139:23
Try me and know my thoughts.
Psalm 139:23
The
heart of a worshiper has the purest of intents, being redeemed by blood
divine, renewed by the bread of life, and is sustained by spirit and
truth; the bookends for purity and translucency. With eyes that once
beheld the beauty of the Ultimate one so pure, heart cleansed by blazing
fire in the eyes of the one she desires. The desire of all nations came
with coal for the unclean lips, hyssop for the impure heart, mud and
spit for the blind. To this end He has revealed Himself as the "pearl of
great price" in its peerless beauty, as the "bundle of myrrh" in its
refreshing fragrance, as the "lily" in its spotless purity.
Works
are seen from the hands, but intentions are buried in the heart. This
is why the psalmist followed clean hands with a pure heart as premises
to ascend to the hill of the Lord. Outward practical holiness is of
importance, that men may see our good works, and glorify our father in
Heaven. But "clean hands" will not suffice unless they are connected
with "a pure heart." True worship reflects the state of the heart. We
may wash the outside of the cup as long as we please, but if the inward
parts be filthy, we are filthy altogether, for our hearts are more truly
 ourselves than our hands are.
